South Africa – Wildlife Volunteer Adventure

Venture to a wildlife reserve tucked in the rolling hills of the South African savanna. Join conservationists on a mission to monitor and protect the region’s vulnerable wildlife – including rhinos, leopards & elephants.

Along the way, explore the beauty of South Africa’s countryside on bush walks and game drives spotting the Big 5.

The Place and The People

South Africa is home to a number of innovative wildlife conservation projects. Nowhere is this more evident than in Somkhanda Game Reserve outside of Durban. One of the country’s largest community-owned reserves, Somkhanda is home to large populations of white and black rhino, leopard & elephants. Along with leading conservation organizations including the World Wildlife Fund, Somkhanda aims to restore this habitat into pristine land for wildlife conservation.

However, due to the dense vegetation and hilly terrain of the park, it is difficult for the small team to gather much-needed information on the area’s wildlife. That is where you come into play – to help one of South Africa’s largest hubs of leopard and endangered rhino compile essential data on the well-being of these fragile creatures.

What You'll Do

Over the course of the trip, you’ll assist a team of local experts to collect vital information on Somkhanda’s flora and fauna. One day, accompany rhino monitors into the field and gather data on their health, interactions with other animals, movement and feeding preferences. Many of these rhinos have been fitted with radio tracking devices which will help us locate them through the reserve’s challenging terrain.

Another day, observe elephants, wild dogs and buffalo in their natural habitat taking down vital data along the way. You’ll also have the chance to join researchers in the field to retrieve images from camera traps used to track leopards and other nocturnal animals. Take these images back to the base and help analyze them to identify the individual animals.

What You'll See

The journey begins in Durban where you’ll have the opportunity to meet with progressive NGOs working with South Africa’s most vulnerable populations, including those affected by HIV/AIDS. Continue onwards up the coast to Somkhanda Game Reserve where the next five days will be spent volunteering alongside conservationists in the park to monitor rhinos, leopards, elephants and other animals. Along the way, enjoy guided bush walks learning about the unique landscape of the area.

Towards the end of the trip, take an epic two day safari through the area’s only reserve hosting the “Big 5” – elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino, as well as over 30 other animal species. Unwind at our luxury tented camp overlooking the rolling grasslands and majestic acacia trees of the Nambiti Game Reserve.

Traveler's Journal

What really drew me to this trip was the ability to take my children on vacation and watch them fall in love with nature. Each day, we joined our guide on a mission to track animals that we had only seen in movies. Watching my kids stare in awe as they watched elephants and rhinos play in the wild was truly priceless. Since we’ve been home, they cannot stop talking about everything they learned in South Africa.
