Dominican Republic – Global Health Initiative

Improve the health and well-being of local women and children while exploring the natural beauty of this vibrant Caribbean island.

The Place and The People

Set amongst swaying palms and picturesque beaches, the small communities of the North Coast of the Dominican are truly a paradise on earth. It’s people echo the scenery, embodying the laid-back, friendly attitude that the Caribbean is best known for.

Underneath this natural beauty, many residents lack some of the most basic resources including access to medical care. A lack of trained physicians, medical facilities and public health education and practices makes it difficult for families who live in these rural regions to manage their health effectively. This is an even larger problem in the communities of Haitian migrants, known as bateys, who lack the rights to these services in the Dominican Republic. Work with the women and children of the North Coast to help fill this gap in medical care.

What You'll Do

Our project focuses on the health of women and children of the rural communities of the North Coast. Volunteer alongside medical professionals to monitor and evaluate the health of children including height, weight, blood pressure and malnutrition screening. Contribute to a maternal health initiative that provides vitamins and other resources to expecting mothers. Help to educate and distribute clean water filters to communities to prevent waterborne illness, a leading contributor to disease on the island.

Through these projects, you’ll gain a deep understanding of health care challenges in the developing world as well as gain hands-on clinical experience as you support local health professionals, and work on projects that will prevent the spread of disease and promote healthier living conditions for rural families.

What You'll See

When you’re not lending a hand in these rural communities, you’ll have the chance to explore the natural beauty that surrounds the North Coast. From the mountains to the sea, the Dominican Republic is a nature lover’s paradise. Take a boat ride through mangroves to a tropical beach and snorkel over colorful reefs teaming with fish. Visit an ecological park to zip-line and swim in freshwater pools. Relax by the pool of our Home Base, a sustainably constructed lodge located just feet away from a stunning beach. This is the Dominican that is far from the resorts and mass-tourism of the eastern part of the island.

Where You'll Stay

Travelers will be staying the duration of the trip at an eco-friendly lodge. This home base is a cluster of beautiful, rustic thatched-roof chalets around a swimming pool. This unique eco-lodge was constructed using sustainable building techniques, and the design reflects that of the indigenous Taino community from the region. The communal space includes a fire pit, a volleyball net and is tucked away down a quiet road within walking distance to the beach.

Traveler's Journal

“I always had an interest in helping out on health issues in the developing world. This experience exposed me to some of the most pressing issues facing these communities such as malnutrition and lack of infrastructure. I also saw some beautiful sights and had time to relax on the beach outside of the Home Base. It was truly a meaningful way to spend my vacation time.”
