Why One Man Called a Trip to Cuba “The Best Investment” He Ever Made

Legal travel to Cuba

Meet John. He’s in his late 60s and traveled to the Soviet Union on a cultural exchange program when he was in college. As he grew into adulthood, the vivid memories from that trip stayed with him.

When he was in his 40s, the Iron Curtain quickly fell and Russia entered a period of rapid change. Coincidentally, John’s company sent him to Russia around this time — and he was able to witness its transformation. Being in the thick of these historical changes in Russia was one of the highlights of his life.

So, when John realized he could travel to Cuba on a cultural exchange program, he knew he had to do it.

He recently returned from Cuba, and we asked him for feedback on the trip. He simply told me, “It was by far the best investment I have ever made.” He went on to explain that his trip to Cuba reminded him of watching the Iron Curtain fall — but this time, in slow motion.

Everywhere he looked, there were signs of change: from the man driving the 1957 Chevy while talking on a cell phone, to the crumbling art deco building hosting an international modern art exhibit. John and his wife plan to return again in a year or two to see how the changes have continued to shape the island.

While the price of the trip for his wife and him was a concern, he recognized that the Discover Corps trip to Cuba is one of the least expensive all-inclusive programs available. As John would say: at this stage in his life, he’s not sure when there will be another opportunity like this.

Will you let it pass you by?

  1. Hi! This is Terry Budebo I’d like to understand in what ways works the Corps and volunteering trip because my daughter Maryjean wants to do the June 13-20th trip and it’s very expensive the quote you have online. I want to know the details of the volunteering part and the age of the travelers signed up as of now. She’s 18. Thanks
