Thailand – Cultural Kaleidoscope

Visit shimmering temples, come face-to-face with majestic elephants and learn to make northern Thai dishes with the locals.

When you’re not exploring the unique corners of Chiang Mai, venture into the hill tribes of the distant Doi Ang Khang mountains.

The Place and The People

Lush mountain landscapes surround traditional-style buildings and golden spires reach towards the sky from traditional Buddhist temples. This is Chiang Mai, the Thai city that is the cultural capital of the country, where the streets are filled with everything from carts selling pad thai to monks shuffling along temple-lined streets with monkeys dangling from treetops. Visit a private organic garden to source ingredients for a Northern Thai cooking class, experience breathtaking views from the lush mountain landscapes that surround Chiang Mai, and journey to a rural hill tribe communities to listen to village elders about how they maintain their unique and traditional way of life.

This will be a behind-the-scenes journey through the colorful landscapes and cultures of Northern Thailand.

What You'll Do

Learn about the history and culture of Northern Thailand as you start your journey with a city tour of Chiang Mai. Along the way, visit an herb garden and board a longtail boat for a ride along the famous Mae Ping River. Stop at a bustling local market for spices and fresh vegetables before climbing into a rickshaw and cruising back through the streets of Chiang Mai. Visit the Chang Khien Coffee Research Project to learn more about the area’s flourishing coffee industry. Experience a cooking lesson with a local, Mr. Prapat, who will provide a warm welcome into his home where you will learn more about traditional Northern Thai cuisine.

Spend two nights in distant villages located in the hills of Northern Thailand. Hike to the top of Thailand’s second highest mountain, Doi Ang Kang, for breathtaking views and visits to remote villages along the way (Don’t worry – you can take a 4×4 as well!). On your way back to Chiang Mai, opt for an optional zip-lining adventure supplement through the treetops and feed elephants at the sanctuary known as the Elephant Nature Park.

What You'll See

Over the course of 8 days, you will see the kaleidoscope of cultures, religions, cuisines and landscapes that make up Northern Thailand – a region that is blissfully calm and laidback. Whether you’re venturing into the hustle and bustle of Thailand’s authentic street markets or traveling to Wat Doi Suthep – the sacred pagoda situated on a mountain high above the city – you’ll experience all of the must-see sights of Chiang Mai. Then continue off the beaten track to the village of Doi Ang Khang, where you will experience breathtaking views from Thailand’s second highest mountain and take in the natural beauty of Northern Thailand’s rolling green mountains and smiling people.

Towards the end of the journey, spend the day in the scenice Mae Taeng valley caring for Thailand’s majestic elephants. Join the caretakers as they bathe and feed these elephants for an unforgettable experience.

Traveler's Journal

“This trip felt like something I couldn’t have done on my own because of the home-cooked meals and local people we were able to interact with. The mix between the city, neighboring villages, and the hill tribe villages found deeper in the heart of Thailand made for such a unique trip. The Elephant bathing was definitely a highlight for us as well as the kids in our group. I would recommend this to anyone interested in experiencing the real Thailand.”
