Peru – Children of the Andes

Relive the past at Machu Picchu while writing your own new stories in the Sacred Valley.

Make a difference in the lives of the Quechua people while immersing yourself in the rich culture of the Andes.

The Place and The People

The heart of the Andes is the town of Cusco, where remnants of a well-preserved historic civilization are abundant and Peruvian culture is alive and well. The famous Inca Trail winds through valleys and mountain passes, revealing its famed stone walls, archaeological artifacts, and historical treasures.

Only 45 minutes away lies a small town where cobblestone streets meander by traditional Peruvian houses. Children dance around the town plaza, chasing each other past old men deep in discussion. The Andes soar in the distance, in stunning contrast to the bright mountain sky. This pueblo will be your Home Base for the majority of the trip.

What You'll Do

Learn to make dolls using colorful traditional fabrics, partake in ceremonies with Peruvian shamans and visit archaeological sites in the Sacred Valley, as well as the famed Machu Picchu. Visit off-the-beaten path locales — where education is key to unlocking doors of opportunity — and lend a hand to local teachers to help students learn English. Whether it’s directly assisting a lesson, creating educational materials or engaging the students in games, this will be a memorable experience for both you and the children of the local community.

What You'll See

Discover remnants of a well-preserved historic civilization, as well as a thriving modern culture. Relish in the beauty of local hand-woven textiles, breathtaking mountain peaks, and artifacts from one the most powerful empires in human history. Meet local artisans, musicians, and grassroots leaders who’ll share their contributions to Andean society. Enjoy the magical ancient city of Machu Picchu, as well as other archaeological sites in the Sacred Valley.

Itinerary Overview

Start with breakfast at Home Base, a century old hacienda with lush gardens and courtyard views. Spend the morning engaging with Peruvian culture, whether its visiting a local shaman to learn about Andean cosmology or making traditional dolls with a women’s group. Return home for lunch, then visit the surrounding villages teaching English and engaging with the local children in an after-school program.

End your day with a home-cooked dinner made from locally-sourced ingredients. Share your meal by the bonfire outside with a community activist who gives you an inside look at the challenges and triumphs facing Andean communities.

Traveler's Journal

“Peru was a magical experience for me. My objective was to see the archaeological sites and beautiful Andean culture. But I ended the trip feeling like I got much more than that – I felt my soul replenished, and I gained a true understanding of what life in the Andes is all about. It was so much deeper than any trip I’ve taken; it was an inspiring and enlightening journey.”
