Rainbow Mountain Extension – Volunteer Vacations | Discover Corps

Rainbow Mountain Extension

Travel by horseback and experience the unforgettable Rainbow Mountain on this
3 Day / 2 Night post-trip extension.
$495 Adult* / $445 Child*

Our Purpose

This is a post-trip extension to our Peru: Children of the Andes core itinerary. The purposeful element occurs during the main itinerary, where travelers live in the small town of Andahuaylillas and aim to help teachers educate children in the community by assisting with an after-school program that helps local children improve their English language skills. Travelers devise lessons and educational games, which will create lasting memories both for you and the children involved. For those who wish to extend their journey, Rainbow Mountain offers another breathtaking side of Peru, away from any volunteering and much more adventurous in nature.

Beyond just an adventure, visit the Pacha Conservancy camp, a local nonprofit working to protect the environment and wildlife that call Peru home.

What You'll Do

On this extension, first visit the Pacha Conservancy camp, an environmental organization where orchids and tea plants grow amid Inca-style stone walls. Support their mission in protecting and restoring our planet as you learn more about the trees that surround you and their importance for wildlife habitats, to fight against climate change, and more. A truly unique experience with a nonprofit making a difference through education and hard work in the surrounding forests.

You will then embark on the adventurous six-mile journey by horseback to the unforgettable Rainbow Mountain. Prepare for a somewhat strenuous but beautiful journey full of alpaca herds, snow-capped mountains in the distance, and untouched desert landscapes before a free day in Cusco the next day.

What You'll See

Vinicunca, or Montaña de Siete Colores (Mountain of Seven Colors), is an excursion for the adventurous. Three-hours from Cusco and a six-mile horseback ride to the trailhead, the journey is as unique as the destination. The mountains’ colors were formed when the ice caps melted and the water mixed with minerals in the ground – red because of rust mixtures, yellow due to iron sulphide, purple from geothite, and green from chlorite. A spectacular site you won’t soon forget!

Your time spent at the Pacha Conservancy has you in the forests of Peru, a stark contrast to Rainbox Mountain. Learn more about climate change and the history of Peruvian lands.

Traveler's Journal

“Peru was a magical experience for me. My objective was to see the archaeological sites and beautiful Andean culture. But I ended the trip feeling like I got much more than that – I felt my soul replenished, and I gained a true understanding of what life in the Andes is all about. It was so much deeper than any trip I’ve taken; it was an inspiring and enlightening journey.”
