Rainbow Mountain is a truly beautiful experience that should not be missed on a trip to Peru. Located deep in the Andes Mountains, Rainbow Mountain is a colorful landscape of turquoise, lavender, gold and red created by mineral deposits. As we ascend to the mountain on horseback, take in the stunning 260 degree views of glaciers and alpacas on the hillsides.
We’ll also visit the Salt Mines of Maras, a picturesque landscape of white rectangles draped over the hills for miles. Learn from locals how these pools work to create the salt and how the salt is gathered before exploring your own way through these photogenic channels.

Where You’ll Stay
On this extension, you’ll stay in the same lodge in Cusco as the main itinerary. Just a short walk from Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, rooms in this boutique hotel are set around a quiet courtyard to keep you close to the city without feeling like you’re in the city. A full buffet breakfast of fresh fruits, breads, egg dishes and various beverages is included each morning, along with complimentary tea throughout the day and evening. Just out the door are some of the best sights, shopping and restaurants in Cusco.
Itinerary Overview
Begin the extension from Cusco traveling into the Andes Mountains to the Salt Mines of Maras. These mines were created by the Inca 2,000 years ago; however the harvesting of the salt has not changed much over the years. Head back to Cusco around 2pm for free time to enjoy the city.
The following day we’ll embark on the adventurous six-mile journey by horseback to the unforgettable Rainbow Mountain. Prepare for a beautiful journey full of alpaca herds, snow-capped mountains in the distance, and untouched desert landscapes before returning back to Cusco.
