What You'll Do

You’ll divide your time between the tropical coast and lush interior of the island. In Ubud, you’ll inspire local children through a community-run education program. Share ideas, create art, play games, and teach English while volunteering at a local school. Build meaningful relationships with the next generation while learning about this culture at the crossroads of development. Both you and your students will create memories to last a lifetime.

You’ll then move to the North Coast of the island to the beach town of Pemuteran, which is home to the largest artificial Biorock reef project in the world. Help to protect the pristine reefs which are under threat from climate change and other factors by removing invasive species and engaging in beach cleanups. You’ll also take a ride on an authentic Balinese spider fishing boat to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the Indian Ocean. Learn about coral reef restoration as you snorkel or swim through schools of tropical fish.

What You'll See

In Ubud, explore a Balinese market and marvel at the colorful fruits, vegetables, and spices. Learn from a village historian, observe monkeys playing overhead, and engage with a leading environmentalist. Don a sarong, make an offering, and then bathe alongside the friendly Balinese people in the waters of a temple. Visit a local banjar, or community center, to learn Balinese arts such as Gamelan music, Legong dance, and woodcarving.

Attend hands-on workshops to learn the Balinese Gamelan drum and Legong dance, be introduced to woodcarving, and create your own ceremonial offering from coconut leaves. Engage in private dialogues with cultural, civic, and academic leaders and hear first hand about challenges faced by the Balinese. Enjoy the unique opportunity to dine with a member of the Ubud Royal Family at their palace and enjoy delicious Indonesian cuisine.

Itinerary Overview

Your home in Bali is split between the village of Ubud and the beaches of Pemuteran with Ibu and Bapak (mother and father) in a traditional home compound — a tranquil courtyard surrounded by separate private rooms. Wake to the clucking of chickens and fall asleep to the sound of traditional music playing at a nearby temple.

Though located in the heart of these soul-filled villages, your Home Bases are surrounded by rice paddies, temples, and breathtaking natural beauty. Most days, you’ll volunteer at the local school in the morning, with afternoons left for exploring sacred temples and beaches while immersing yourself in the local culture.

Traveler's Journal

I traveled to Bali to give back, but I ended up receiving more inspiration, insight and awareness than I ever dreamed of. While the trip was full of fun cultural activities, I also felt a sense of peace and calm the whole time.

I had been to Bali before, but this was a completely different experience with Discover Corps. It really allowed me to feel like an insider. Having dinner with the Prince of Ubud in his palace was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thank you for this unforgettable adventure.
