Cuba: Celebration of Arts & Culture – Volunteer Vacations | Discover Corps

Cuba – Celebration of Arts & Culture

Enjoy Cuba’s vibrant music and arts scene. Connect with Cuban artists and dancers while discovering its cultural heritage.

Our Purpose

Cuba is a nation of vibrant music, color, feeling and tastes. While the Buena Vista Social Club popularized Cuban music, and Anthony Bourdain brought its restaurants to television, the island has a long tradition of supporting art and culture.  Its musicians have fueled the global music scene and its artists continue to produce world-class paintings.

To achieve our purpose in supporting the Cuban people, we’ll connect with Cubans and learn about the island’s evolving culture, both in the alleyways of Havana and further afield in the stunning colonial towns of Trinidad and Cienfuegos. We’ll also delve into Cuba’s culinary scene, visiting family-run, or paladar, restaurants.

What You'll Do

Cuba is synonymous with art & music. Just walk through the streets of Havana where the sounds of jazz and salsa echo out of cafes and artwork adorns the century old buildings.

Uncover Cuba’s vibrant art scene with a visit to a Havana neighborhood transformed by street art, visit renowned Cuban artists and take in a private performance from a Cuban guitar ensemble. Experience a memorizing display of talent from the Habana Compas Dance troupe, explore Havana’s famous Museum of Fine Arts and take a step into the past walking through Old Havana – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every interaction is guaranteed to be engaging and insightful.

What You'll See

This 8-day journey begins in Havana, the capital city of fascinating history and charming architecture. From there, progress east to the colonial town of Trinidad, where you can soak in the vibrant arts scene. This town is so unique that it’s earned UNESCO’s designation as a World Heritage Site.

For history buffs, a stop at the Bay of Pigs is essential for viewing the past through the Cuban perspective. This trip even includes a visit to the town of Cienfuegos — giving you an opportunity to meet with community groups and local residents so you can gain insight into life in a small Cuban town.

Optional Post-Trip Extension

Natural Cuba (3 days/ 2 nights)

For a completely different Cuban experience, head West to the beautiful countryside on this post-trip extensions. Experience Las Terrazas, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and enjoy freshly prepared coffee from local plantations before meeting with local farmers and artisans from the small eco-village that calls the area home. In the afternoon, visit the famous San Juan River and soak in the waterfalls and natural swimming pools. On day two we discover what is possibly the most enchanting

region of Cuba – the Viñales Valley. Huge rocky cliffs line the lush valley, dotted with small farms and traditional villages. Spend the morning at one of the largest orchid gardens in Cuba followed by a visit to an agro-ecological farm where you will see Cuba’s organic farming heritage in practice. Our visit will culminate with a delicious lunch overlooking the valley alongside the staff of the farm before a guided tour of the town. Request an itinerary or visit here to learn more!

Where You'll Stay

During your trip, you’ll have the unique opportunity to stay in casas particulares, which literally translates as private homes. Casas are essentially family-run bed & breakfasts (think AirBnB’s with private breakfast in the morning). Families invest in making sure their houses are up to international quality standards, and they greet you with Cuban hospitality – but also give you the privacy and comfort you desire.

While houses vary in style from eclectic to classical, they all provide a comfortable glimpse into Cuban life. Our portfolio of casas particulares are hand selected with prime locations that will put you right in heart of the action and have private bathrooms, air conditioning & a fresh breakfast each morning.

Traveler's Journal

Joyce and I had an even better time during our stay in Cuba than either one of us ever imagined or hoped for. Our tour guide, Orelvis, was excellent: relaxed, unassuming, friendly, knowledgeable. He was just a pleasure to be with throughout the trip. In fact, we have stayed in touch regularly since our return. Our ‘casa particulares’ were also spot on for us – in Havana it had modern amenities, and in Trinidad it had the ambiance of the Cuban heritage. The openness and inclusion both families extended to us during our stays gave us peeks into Cuban daily life. Our cultural and artistic journey through the island has left an indelible mark on our lives and our memories. Whether it was Orelvis exposing us to the history of Cuban art at the Cuban National Museum of Fine Arts, or our dining on savory Tapas in Trinidad, or us learning the guarded history of the Castillo De Los Tres Reyes Del Morro, Joyce and I were enthralled with this land and its people nearly every waking moment. Joyce and I thank all of the Discover Corps Team that made this such an excellent and memorable trip for us. Thank you.
