Experience the iconic Guelaguetza festivities & be immersed in Oaxacan culture!

The Experience

Oaxaca is a city of profound cultural layers, and there is no moment where those layers are more vibrant than during the Guelaguetza Festival. Known locally as the Lunes del Cerro, this is North America’s largest indigenous celebration—a breathtaking explosion of dance, music, and ancestral pride. But while the festival provides the electric backdrop for our journey, the true soul of this experience lies in the quiet, exclusive moments between the parades. We move beyond the grand spectacle to offer a refined 360-degree view of the valley, balancing the energy of the city with the soulful intimacy of the Zapotec heartland.

When you aren’t swept up in the rhythms of the Guelaguetza, you’ll be exploring the ancestral foundations of Mexico. Go behind the scenes into the sun-drenched private studios of the Ocotlán Valley, where master artisans—from weavers to woodcarvers—invite you to witness the alchemy of their craft. Climb the silent, mountaintop ruins of Monte Albán and wander the mural-lined cobblestones of Jalatlaco, Oaxaca’s oldest and most artistic neighborhood. Each day is a curated culinary pilgrimage, taking you from the aromatic chaos of the local markets to the candlelight elegance of Casa Oaxaca, ensuring you experience the valley’s world-renowned cuisine.

The Spirit of the Guelaguetza Festival

Experience Mexico’s most iconic celebration of indigenous culture through a lens of purpose, cultural exploration and deep culinary tradition.

An Experience of Colors & Traditions

The Guelaguetza is more than a festival; it is a sacred social contract. Derived from the Zapotec word “to give,” the event centers on the idea that community is sustained through mutual support and the sharing of culture. During the last two weeks of July, the city of Oaxaca transforms into the “Fiesta Máxima.” You’ll witness the Desfile de Delegaciones, a massive parade of brass bands and swirling silk, and attend the main Guelaguetza procession where dancers from the state’s eight regions toss handmade “gifts”—from fruit to hand-carved crafts—into the cheering crowd.

Your experience is curated to ensure you see the festival as an insider. From a private terrace offering a bird’s-eye view of the city’s most vibrant processions to securing the best seats during the procession, we prioritize exclusive access and comfort. Accompanied by our expert local guides, you’ll learn the deep-seated symbolism behind the costumes and the “why” behind the rhythms, discovering a side of Mexico that remains fiercely authentic and beautifully preserved.

Where You’ll Stay

During our time in Oaxaca City, we’ll stay in one of the colorful boutique hotels we partner with. Our main hotel, Hotel con Corazón, is a modern and cozy hotel where profits go into local schools to help lift up the local community. This boutique hotel & social enterprise is one with heart, recognizing that Oaxaca is one of the poorest states in Mexico, and children need more resources to ensure they finish school. This brand-new building in the heart of the old city of Oaxaca includes private bathrooms, WiFi, fans, and garden views from all rooms. Spots are limited at Hotel con Corazón, so if this accommodation is full, we will split the group into another beautiful boutique hotel in Oaxaca City.

Itinerary Overview

Our journey begins in the “Valley of Eternal Spring” with a delicious Welcome Dinner followed by a day spent wandering the emerald-stone streets and historic markets of the city’s colonial heart. We’ll then journey to the pre-Hispanic Tlacolula Market and the ruins of Mitla, returning to the city for a private terrace dinner with a bird’s-eye view of the grand festival parade. The centerpiece of the week is our attendance at the main Guelaguetza celebration, where we witness the official presentation of Zapotec dances before sharing a traditional lunch at the legendary La Capilla.

The exploration continues into the Ocotlán Valley, where we enter the private studios of master artisans to watch the creation of black clay pottery, hand-painted alebrijes, and intricate textiles. We conclude our immersion by climbing the mountaintop ruins of Monte Albán and wandering through the vibrant, mural-lined streets of Jalatlaco. Our final evening is celebrated with an exquisite farewell dinner at Casa Oaxaca, marking the end of a week defined by deep connection and the enduring spirit of tradition.
