Cuba: Natural Cuba - Volunteer Vacations | Discover Corps

Cuba – Natural Cuba Extension

Uncover the natural side of Cuba – lush countryside, tropical offshore islands and biosphere reserves. This is reason why Cuba is dubbed the “Pearl of the Caribbean”.

Our Purpose

Our purpose for this extension is similar to our Cuba: Preserving Nature’s Wonders trip. Cuba is a world unto itself when it comes to conservation. Despite being so close to the U.S., Cuba has remained largely isolated from the primary sources of pollution – pesticides, agricultural runoff, & large scale development. Coupled with government conservation efforts, Cuba has been dubbed “the accidental Eden.”

Coupled with tropical offshore islands with some of the most well-preserved reefs in the region, you will have a the chance to see a place stuck in time. To achieve our purpose and support the west coast communities of Cuba, we’ll explore the farms, beaches, and landscapes of this region and meet the people who work to preserve it.

What You'll Do

From Havana, head west to Las Terrazas, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the heart of the Cuban countryside. Enjoy freshly prepared coffee and vegetarian food sourced directly from the valley for lunch before visiting one of Cuba’s first coffee plantations for a tour from local farmers. In the afternoon, meet with artisans from the small eco-village that continues to thrive here. Visit the famous San Juan River to soak in the waterfalls and natural swimming pools before heading back to your casa particulare for dinner.

In addition to Las Terrazas, experience the rocky cliffs and lush landscapes of Viñales Valley. Our visit will culminate with a delicious lunch overlooking the valley alongside the staff of the farm, before a guided tour of the town.

What You'll See

Take a guided trek through the Viñales Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and marvel at the gorgeous mogotes, the towering limestone and marble hills that surround you. Spend the morning at one of the largest orchid gardens in Cuba followed by a visit to an agro-ecological farm where you will see Cuba’s organic farming heritage in practice.

Along the way, meet with fascinating people who have a role in protecting Cuba’s fragile resources. Whether it’s a tobacco farmer who has spent his life in Viñales or having lunch with a local conservationist that created a small-scale organic farm in one of Cuba’s most beautiful corners, this will be glimpse into a wholly unique side of Cuba.

Where You'll Stay

During your trip, you’ll have the unique opportunity to stay in casas particulares, which literally translates as private homes. Casas are essentially family-run bed & breakfasts (think AirBnB’s with private breakfast in the morning). Families invest in making sure their houses are up to international quality standards, and they greet you with Cuban hospitality – but also give you the privacy and comfort you desire.

While houses vary in style from eclectic to classical, they all provide a comfortable glimpse into Cuban life. Our portfolio of casas particulares are hand selected with prime locations that will put you right in heart of the action and have private bathrooms, air conditioning & a fresh breakfast each morning.

Traveler's Journal

I have traveled alone without a guide throughout the world and I thought the experience with Discover Corps in Cuba gave me a very good flavor of this country. The schedule, activities, free time, casa particulares, meals and guides gave us a combination of structure and immersion into Cuba. I never felt disconnected from the people and their everyday lives.
