The Western side of Cuba is a largely untouched gem of traditional villages and stunning valleys. From Havana, head west to Las Terrazas, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the heart of the Cuban countryside. Enjoy freshly prepared coffee and vegetarian food sourced directly from the valley for lunch before visiting one of Cuba’s first coffee plantations for a tour from local farmers. In the afternoon, meet with artisans from the small eco-village that continues to thrive here. Visit the famous San Juan River to soak in the waterfalls and natural swimming pools before heading back to your casa particulare for dinner.
Take a guided trek through the Viñales Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and marvel at the gorgeous mogotes, the towering limestone and marble hills that surround you. Spend the morning at one of the largest orchid gardens in Cuba followed by a visit to an agro-ecological farm where you will see Cuba’s organic farming heritage in practice.
Extend Your Journey in Cuba
Explore a different side of Cuba in Las Terrazas and the Viñales Valley. Whether it’s meeting a tobacco farmer who has spent his life in Viñales or having lunch with a local conservationist that created a small-scale organic farm in one of Cuba’s most beautiful corners, this will be glimpse into a wholly unique side of Cuba.
Where You’ll Stay
Like the main portion of the trip, you’ll have the unique opportunity to stay in casas particulares, which literally translates as private homes. Casas are essentially family-run bed & breakfasts (think AirBnB’s with private breakfast in the morning). Families invest in making sure their houses are up to international quality standards, and they greet you with Cuban hospitality – but also give you the privacy and comfort you desire.
While houses vary in style from eclectic to classical, they all provide a comfortable glimpse into Cuban life. Our portfolio of casas particulares are hand selected with prime locations that will put you right in heart of the action and have private bathrooms, air conditioning & a fresh breakfast each morning.
Begin the extension traveling from Havana along the calm roads of the Cuban countryside to Las Terrazas. Enjoy a fresh organic lunch from the valley before visiting a coffee plantation and meeting with artisans from a small eco-village. End the day with a visit the waterfalls and swimming pools of the San Juan River.
Continue to the enchanting Viñales Valley. Huge rocky cliffs line the lush valley, dotted with small farms and traditional villages. Spend the morning at one of the largest orchid gardens in Cuba followed by a visit to an agro-ecological farm where you will see Cuba’s organic farming heritage in practice. Our visit will culminate with a delicious lunch overlooking the valley alongside the staff of the farm, before a guided tour of the town
