Tanzania – East Africa Unveiled

Discover the heart, soul, and wildlife of East Africa.

Go beyond the movies and discover the real Africa: spot wildlife on an African safari, spend time with the Masai people, and volunteer at a village school. This journey is a window into a uniquely preserved way of life.

The Place and The People

Rising above the African plains, Mount Kilimanjaro is the backdrop of your Home Base. Located off the narrow dirt roads in a village outside of Moshi, you’ll be in the center of Tanzanian culture. Walk down the road and inevitably be greeted with a handshake and a loud “Jambo!” The Chagga tribe, who are local to this region, are incredibly friendly and eager to share their customs and history.

What You'll Do

Schools in rural areas suffer from overcrowded classrooms and deteriorating infrastructure. Assist in a local primary school teaching English and basic math. Volunteer alongside teachers to develop instructional aids and make improvements to the curriculum. When not in the classroom, help to improve the school’s infrastructure by planting gardens and refurbishing classrooms.

What You'll See

Take a nature walk to a stunning waterfall along the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa. Take the jeep ride of a lifetime in two of the world’s most famous safari parks: Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park. See a pantheon of wildlife in their natural habitat, including zebras, lions, leopards, elephants, wildebeest, and rhinos. Connect with the Masai and learn about their unique, age-old nomadic culture by throwing spears, learning traditional dances, and making jewelry.

Where You'll Stay

Your home-away-from-home lies tucked into the narrow dirt roads that snake through the quaint Tanzanian village of Rau. Just outside Moshi, the large walled lodge boasts stunning views of Kilimanjaro in the distance, peaceful gardens and a lively common area that serves as the perfect backdrop to your East African experience. Rooms are double or single occupancy with attached private bathrooms. Most meals are eaten at the bed and breakfast cooked by our lovely local team.

Traveler's Journal

“Tanzania was an inspiring place. Mount Kilimanjaro and the wildlife safari were definite highlights, but having a personal connection to the community made a world of difference. While I wish I could have volunteered more, I did feel like my time at the school connected me to the community. I feel like I have friends there now and I’m looking forward to going back.”
