Zanzibar Island Extension

Add a perfect 4 days on a tropical Indian Ocean island to your Kenya or Tanzania experience. Adult: $895* / Child: $845

Our Purpose

Rising up from the Indian Ocean about 25 miles from the Tanzanian Coast, this idyllic archipelago is lapped by turquoise waters lined with coral reefs brimming with an abundance of exotic marine life. At the heart of the island is Zanzibar’s old city, Stone Town. Known to be the only functioning ancient town in East Africa, the coastal town’s maze of narrow alleys, lively bazaars, mosques and ornate Arab houses are a step back into time. Further afield lies tropical offshore islands, vast spice fields and rural villages which we’ll explore over this 4 day post-trip extension.

What You'll Do

Over the course of 4 days, we’ll compliment our time in Kilimanjaro’s vast plains with an Indian Ocean island adventure. Explore the winding streets of Stone Town venturing through the former Slave Market, the Sultan’s Palace and the Old Arab Fort on a guided tour. Along the way, experience modern-day island life in the coastal spice and fish markets. Venture offshore to idyllic Prison Island and scout for the island’s famous giant tortoises at a sanctuary, relax on powder white beaches and swim in crystal blue waters.

What You'll See

The beauty of Zanzibar is the breadth of experiences that can be had in such a short period of time. We’ll balance our time exploring the historic alleys and markets of vibrant Stone Town with a relaxing afternoon basking in the tropical sun along the shorelines of the Indian Ocean. Those who seek more adventure can head out on the water for an optional snorkel trip through the warm turquoise waters scouting for colorful fish along the offshore coral reefs.

Visit a giant tortoise sanctuary and come face-to-face with these gentle creatures, some of whom are over 100 years old! Back on the main island, venture to a village spice farm experiencing the slow pace of local life while trying some the spices that have made this island a center of trade for centuries.

Where You'll Stay

We’ll split our time between two of Zanzibar’s iconic towns so you get to experience both sides of this vibrant island. The first two nights will be spent at the majestic 4-star Tembo House Hotel on the beach in historic Stone Town. Explore the picturesque seafront, venture through the area’s markets and take a step back into history just minutes from the hotel. The last night of the extension will be spent at the oceanfront Amaan Bungalows in the northern beach town of Nungwi. Set amid a landscape of coconut palms, shaded trees and sweet scented flowers, the hotel provides a relaxing home-away-from-home in Zanzibar.

Traveler's Journal

“Tanzania was an inspiring place. Mount Kilimanjaro and the wildlife safari were definite highlights, but having a personal connection to the community made a world of difference. While I wish I could have volunteered more, I did feel like my time at the school connected me to the community. I feel like I have friends there now and I’m looking forward to going back.”
