Cuba: Trinidad & Cienfuegos Extension | Discover Corps

Cuba – Trinidad & Cienfuegos Extension

Explore the colorful alleyways of Trinidad and the colonial town of Cienfuegos for new Cuban adventures.

Our Purpose

After spending your time in the countryside of Cuba, it’s time to explore other areas of the island rich with music, art, and the sounds of Havana. Similar to our Celebration of Arts & Culture trip, to achieve our purpose in supporting the Cuban people, we’ll connect with Cubans and learn about the island’s evolving culture, both in the alleyways of Havana and further afield in the stunning colonial towns of Trinidad and Cienfuegos. We’ll also delve into Cuba’s culinary scene, visiting family-run, or paladar, restaurants.

What You'll Do

After spending a bit of time in Havana on your last trip, you’ll hit the ground running on this extension. Visit the historic site of the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cienfuegos for a rare glimpse into history. Stop for lunch and a tour of this French colonial town before arriving in Trinidad for a dinner and then an evening at your leisure.

A guided tour takes us through the colorful alleyways of Trinidad, where the sound of horses’ hooves drifts through the air and Spanish buildings line tropical plazas. We’ll learn a few steps at a private salsa class, before dinner on your own in the Plaza Mayor, which comes to life each evening with live music and dance.

What You'll See

This post-trip extension begins in Havana before quickly heading out to its neighboring towns. From there, progress east to the colonial town of Trinidad, where you can soak in the vibrant arts scene. This town is so unique that it’s earned UNESCO’s designation as a World Heritage Site.

For history buffs, a stop at the Bay of Pigs is essential for viewing the past through the Cuban perspective. This trip even includes a visit to the town of Cienfuegos – giving you an opportunity to meet with community groups and local residents so you can gain insight into life in a small Cuban town.

Where You'll Stay

During your trip, you’ll have the unique opportunity to stay in casas particulares, which literally translates as private homes. Casas are essentially family-run bed & breakfasts (think AirBnB’s with private breakfast in the morning). Families invest in making sure their houses are up to international quality standards, and they greet you with Cuban hospitality – but also give you the privacy and comfort you desire.

While houses vary in style from eclectic to classical, they all provide a comfortable glimpse into Cuban life. Our portfolio of casas particulares are hand selected with prime locations that will put you right in heart of the action and have private bathrooms, air conditioning & a fresh breakfast each morning.

Traveler's Journal

Joyce and I had an even better time during our stay in Cuba than either one of us ever imagined or hoped for. Our tour guide, Orelvis, was excellent: relaxed, unassuming, friendly, knowledgeable. He was just a pleasure to be with throughout the trip. In fact, we have stayed in touch regularly since our return. Our ‘casa particulares’ were also spot on for us – in Havana it had modern amenities, and in Trinidad it had the ambiance of the Cuban heritage. The openness and inclusion both families extended to us during our stays gave us peeks into Cuban daily life. Our cultural and artistic journey through the island has left an indelible mark on our lives and our memories.
