Guide Spotlight: Mama Simba

We truly can’t say enough about our expert local guides. So much of any trip is who leads it – your guide sets the tone, connects the group and holds the key to all of the secrets of a place. In many ways, the quality of the trip is a direct reflection of the quality of the leader, and at Discover Corps, the difference between a simple vacation and a multifaceted journey of discovery has so much to do with our expert local guides!

An excellent guide is someone who is energized by sharing their home with travelers, not simply doing a “job.” They are someone who can answer all the questions that pop up along the journey, about the culture, history and very core of a place versus reciting a script. Most importantly, the best guides have the ability to inspire curiosity and make their home feel like home to everyone.

Mama Simba’s Tanzanian Hospitality

When you step into the warm, sunlit courtyard of one of our guest houses in Tanzania, you are not arriving at a hotel – you are being welcomed home by Mama Simba.

A true pillar of her community, Esther “Mama” Simba brings our Safari & Service itinerary to life through decades of deep local roots and a fierce, lifelong passion for community development. To travel with her is to bypass the bubble of standard safari tourism and step directly into the soul of Tanzanian society. Whether she is introducing our travelers to local families, sharing the history of the Chagga and Maasai people or leading our projects in the various primary schools that we have partnered with for decades, her presence grants our groups a level of trust and intimate access that is truly unrivaled.

What truly sets Mama Simba apart, however, is her rare ability to fuse authentic local advocacy with an environment of profound safety and comfort. As the oldest of 26 children with nearly two decades of experience working with U.S. Peace Corps volunteers, our travelers frequently mention that her guest house feels like an immediate extension of their own families—a sanctuary where meticulous care, embedded local connections, and freshly prepared local dishes from Chef Mama D seamlessly blend with purposeful experiences.

Mama Simba doesn’t just show you Tanzania; she invites you to be a part of it, turning simple daily interactions into life-altering moments of shared humanity. She represents the very essence of the Discover Corps guide: an expert, an advocate, and a lifelong friend who ensures you return home with a new perspective.
