Belize – Tikal Extension
Post-Trip Extension
Our Purpose
Just a short flight from the turquoise beaches of Belize lies one of the mighty Mayan civilization’s most superb urban centers. Tucked deep in the heart of the jungle, the ruins of Tikal encompass over 200 square miles of nearly 3,000 buildings including elaborate temples, monuments and shrines. Built during the height of the Mayan civilization’s rule in Central America, Tikal remained a mystery for centuries, abandoned by the Maya over 1000 years ago and enshrouded in dense jungle growth. Uncovered in the 19th Century, today, Tikal remains one of the most well-preserved remnants of an ancient civilization.
What You'll Do
This experience is designed as an add-on to the Belize: Wildlife Exploration trip. On the final day of the Belize trip, board a short 45 minute flight from Belize City to Flores, Guatemala. Upon arrival, hit the ground running with a visit to Ixpanpajul Nature Park, a stunning park tucked deep in the rainforest the features canopy walks, zip-lines and surrounding wildlife.
The next day will be a full day of exploration through the ruins of Tikal National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the heart of the Guatemalan jungles, venture through the ruins of sacred temples and palaces while taking in the surrounding natural world. End the journey with a day of exploration in Ixpanpajul Nature Park, a wild reserve surrounding this cradle of the Mayan culture.
What You'll See
The 4 day extension into the jungles of Guatemala will be split between exploring some of the most well-preserved Mayan ruins in the world with nature. Rising high above the trees, uncover some of the main temples of the Tikal complex including the Temple of the Great Jaguar, the Temple of the Mask and the Temple of the Inscriptions. Along with your guide, learn how the Mayan Civilization came to be one of the most powerful in the world and how these ruins signify their rule.
We’ll balance our time meandering through the ruins with exploration in the surrounding jungles, some of Central America’s densest. Visit Ixpanpajul Nature Park, home to nearly 200 tree species, 150 bird species and 40 different mammals, all of which you’ll watch for on rain forest walks that meander through the canopy on a series of suspension bridges. For adrenaline seekers, there is an exciting zip line opportunity—a chance to whiz through the treetops on a system of cables and platforms that will have you swinging alongside the monkeys!
Where You'll Stay
Located in the heart of the Mayan world, Bolontiku Hotel will serve as a relaxing jungle retreat during your time in Tikal. A boutique hotel located on directly on the lake, Bolontiku offers the perfect blend of jungle location and proximity to the national park. Relax by the hotel’s pool, treat yourself to a massage at the spa, engage in a fabulous range on activities in the lake or simply take in the surrounding nature in the hotel’s stunning vistas.
